Giant Food, a US-based supermarket chain, has removed Gold Coast Fresh Crab Spread from its shelves, following a recall by GoldCoast due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The product subject to recall bears UPC code 83355500325 and an expiry date of 31 January 2013.

No illnesses have been reported associated with the consumption of the recalled product. Customers who have bought the product have been urged to discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumption of products containing Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Giant Food, headquartered in Landover, Maryland, operates 170 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.
